
The Nigerian government says it has commenced the implementation of the new National Teaching Policy.
The Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, disclosed at a news briefing in Abuja on Monday, to mark this year’s World Teachers Day.
“This year’s theme, The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers” emphasized the need and importance of empowering teachers for effective transformation of education, to ensure quality teaching and learning; as well as channeling technological growth to match up the changes needed for national development.
Alhaji Adamu Adamu said the policy is solely aimed at addressing the career path of teachers, their remuneration, professional teaching standards, qualification, deployment and management of teachers.
He also reiterated the need to continually refresh the consciousness of government towards the value, role and importance of teachers in nation building, the attainment and sustainability of quality education.
Meanwhile, the ministry started this year’s preparation with a call for nomination among Unity Colleges nation wide, for selection of meritorious nominees.
The national President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, represented by Mr Stephen, lauded the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, for sustaining the PTSEA, which has helped to give help to teachers, and also promote the dignity of the teaching profession at large.
Mr Audu highlighted that teachers remain key players in any nation building.
He further commended the incumbent administration, for signing into law the harmonized Retirement age for teachers on attainment of 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service.
