A Magistrate Court in Yaba has ordered the remand of police officer, Drambi Vandi, who shot dead a Lagos-based lawyer, Bolanle Raheem on Christmas Day. has appeared before the Magistrate Court in Yab.
Current Matters reports that the court on Friday ordered that Vandi be remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre until January 30.
At the head of the prosecution counsel is Lagos Attorney-General, Moyo Onigbanjo .
The 41- year old deceased lawyer was coming from an eatery with some family members on Christmas Day and had tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the policeman shot at her vehicle and hit her.
She was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
Bolanle had a child and was said to be seven-month pregnant when the incident happened.
Her death raised public outcry on the issue of policing in the country as many Nigerians reasoned that the police were yet to learn any lesson from the# EndSARS protests of October 2020.
Her killer,Vandi an Assistant Superintendent of Police ( ASP)had claimed that Bolanle was killed after a bullet accidentally discharged from his rifle, but the Nigerian Police Force ( NPF) argued that Vandis claim was false.
Baring his mind on the fatal incident on a TV programme, the Force Spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi countered the accidental discharge claim saying the shot would not have been fired if the gun was not corked.
” Let me say this, I don’t believe in an accidental discharge. If you don’t cork your gun, you cannot fire. And If your rifle is not corked, then you can’t pull the trigger. If you cork your gun, then it means you are ready to fire. So, I don’t think there is anything called accidental discharge”
President Muhammadu Buhari had shortly after the incident ordered the IGP to ensure that justice was given.
The Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA) has also vowed to ensure that its slain member got justice.
NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN had while speaking on National TV a few days ago assured that his association would monitor the murder case very closely to ensure that it got to its conclusion and the killer got the punishment he deserved.
