Central Bank of Nigeria CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele has assured the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC of adequate provision of naira notes in the coming elections for it to pay service providers.
Emefiele gave the assurance at a meeting Tuesday when the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu led 11 commissioners to his office in Abuja.
Yakubu had expressed concerns about the scarcity of naira notes and possible impact on the 2023 elections
The CBN governor also gave assurance that the bank will not allow itself to be used as an agent of Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says that the apex bank will not allow itself to be used to frustrate a genuine assignment as the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
The CBN governor said “If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment,”
The INEC chairman had told the CBN governor that the 2023 polls will be the best in Nigeria’s history, adding that concerns have, however, been raised about the processes leading to the elections.
He told Emefiele that though INEC has transferred all its accounts at the state and national level to the CBN, some of the services being rendered to the commission needed to be paid for in cash,
