The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Mr Chinyere Igwe, a Federal lawmaker for offences bordering on money laundering.
He was arrested by Policemen deployed to INEC Headquarters Aba Road at about 0245 hrs while on stop and search duty.
Igwe represents Port Harcourt,( PHALGA) Constituency 2 in the House of Representatives.
At the time of his arrest,he was found with the sum of$498,100 in his car along with a list for distribution of the money.
In a press statement on Friday, the Command’s Spokesperson SP, Grace Iringe – Koko said “the AIG overseeing the election in the state,, AIG Abutu Yaro fdc , has ordered swift interrogation and arraignment in court.
The statement captioned Rivers police Arrest Hon Chinyere Igwe For Money Laundering reads:
“Police Officers from Rivers State Command deployed to INEC Headquarters,Aba Road today 24/2/2023 at about 0245hrs, while on stop and search, arrested one Hon Chinyere Igwe, member House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt II Constituency with a cash sum of 498,100 USD inside a bag in his car.
” Also recovered was a list for distribution of the money.
“The AIG Election,AIG Abutu Yaro fdc has ordered swift interrogation and arraignment in court.
The Command urges all constestants and political parties to comply strictly with provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.
