Bandits have attacked the headquarters of the Maru Local Government of Zamfara State.
Reports say the bandits stormed the LGA headquarters and engaged police officers in a gun battle, killing the DPO, and a Sergeant.
It was gathered that the gunmen also killed a vigilante and abducted an unspecified number of residents.
The Divisional Police Officer of the Local Government, Kazeem Raheem reportedly lost his life while trying to repel the attack.
The attack comes a week after the Presidential election on February 25.
It will be recalled that Zamfara,a state ridden by trigger happy bandits was very peaceful throughout the period of the last election .
However, the resurgence of bandit attacks a week to the gubernatorial election has raised serious concerns about the motive of the gunmen and how the March 11 election in the state would look like.
The incumbent governor,Bello Matawalle is seeking a second term in office .He would be facing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate, Lawal Garba. The Labour party in the state is weak following the defection of the Deputy Governorship candidate of the party along with three Senatorial and seven House of Representatives candidates to the APC.
