Governor, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has charged the recently elected National Assembly members in the state not to pledge loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee( PDP NWC),
The governor said this when House of Representatives members- elect paid him a visit to present their certificates of return to him.
He charged the newly elected Federal Lawmakers to focus on the interest of the country and the state and not to the party’s leadership since it did not contribute to the success of their elections.
Wike and four other governors belonging to the G-5 had had a running battle with the NWC of the PDP over power sharing in the party.
The governors also referred to as the” Integrity Group” had demanded the resignation of Dr Iyiorcha Ayu, the National Chairman of the party to give way to the emergence of a Southerner for the office.
They argued that with Atiku Abubakar,a northerner winning the party’s presidential primary, it was only fair that the position of the National Chairman returned to the South.
But the leadership of the PDP failed to heed to the concerns raised by the five governors making the governors to seek other ways of achieving the rotation of power to the South.
In what is seen as a keenly contested election of February 25 2023, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress APC was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC
The election was a 3- horse race which had Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour party ( LP) as top contenders among 15 others.
