….. As Nigerians expressed satisfaction with Emefiele’s suspension
The Deputy Governor Operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi has taken over as Governor of the Apex bank.
This follows the suspension of Godwin Emefiele from office as governor.
Earlier,a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information
The statement had directed Emefiele “to immediately handover the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor ( Operations Directorate) . pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms “
Emefiele had been in the eye of the storm for the wrong monetary policies.
Towards the end of the administration of the Buhari government, He defiantly, after being disallowed to pursue a presidential dream, introduced draconic Naita Redesign Policy which collapsed businesses and even sent people to their early graves.
Under his tenure as CBN governor, the exchange rate between the local currency, Naira to the Dollar, worsened rallying currently at about N770 at the black market with official window recording little improvement.
Under his tenure, Parents groaned and sourced for foreign currencies to pay school fees for their children while the Form A window was encouraged for the high and mighty.
Likewise, Travellers on foreign airlines had to pay their fares in dollars to get on board as the country’s naira became non grata due to billions of dollars of foreign airlines trapped in the CBN.
A Banker who spoke to current matters on hearing the news of his suspension said ” But he is neither an economist nor a monetary expert. Why did they appoint him in the first place?
Another on the street said his “suspension is well deserved”.
” I have no regrets that he’s gone. I hope this suspension is terminal? He asked.
Yet another, said” President Tinubu is writing the wrongs of his predecessor. What Buhari couldn’t do, Tinubu is doing it. We are very happy with the president. He has demonstrated that he’s the president ” he said.
Before the inauguration of the president on May 29, reports had indicated that the CBN governor, the numerous punishment he doled out to Nigerians had concluded plans to flee the country.
Surprisingly, he was among the first persons to see the new president over the nagging removal of subsidy on Petrol
