The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Rivers State Chapter has called on the Chairman of Obio Akpo Local Government Council,Mr George Ariolu to extend its Human Capacity Development to the Association to actualize her set goals and objectives in improving welfare of the down trodden women and girls in Rivers State.
Chairperson of NAWOJ Rivers State Chapter, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana made the appeal when she led some members of the excecutive and members of the Association on a courtesy visit to Ariolu in his office in Obio Akpor Local Government Council.
The NAWOJ Chairman while extolling the LGA boss for his Educational and structural developmental strides in improving the wellbeing of indigenes and non Indigenes in the area, said NAWOJ as a body of female journalists will also want to join efforts with him in building the capacity of young girls in Obio/Akpor LGA, especially those, who have dropped out of school through her advocacy programes.
She told the chairman “Sir, we heard you clearly during the presentation of the first tranche of Cheques issued to over those indigenes and residents of LGA willingly to go into their Masters and Ph.D degrees, when you said that Education remains the bedrock of the society and that having an integral part of human existence, this is why we described you as the golden fish that has no place to hide. In appreciation of what you are doing, NAWOJ as a body of female journalism professionals also want to join efforts with you in building the capacity of young girls in Obio/Akpor LGA, especially those, who have dropped out of school through advocacy.”
“Chairman Sir, while we commend your efforts and pray that you gain higher grounds, we appeal that your kind gesture be extended to NAWOJ Rivers State, so we are able to actualise our set goals and objectives in building the capacity of the down trodden women and girls in Rivers State. Over the years, NAWOJ has been supporting the girl child in the rural area as part of her yearly activity to mark the International Girl Child Day. This year NAWOJ is targeting one of the Girls Secondary Schools in Obio Akpor to Mark the International day of the girl child, which entails getting these students school bags, Pen, hygiene sanitary pads, Exercise books, among others”, she concluded.
On his part, the council chairman, Ariolu while commending NAWOJ for her life changing visions and projects, said the LGA achieved so much in infrastructural and Human Capacity Development in the last two years without borrowing from the bank.
Ariolu said the media is not showcasing government’s achievements but disseminating information not good for national building.
He said the LGA will support NAWOJ with one million naira to carry out her projects especially during this year’s International Day for the Girl Child.
