Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Friday, announced United States-based Nigerian coach, Rena Wakama, as new Head Coach of the national women’s team, D’Tigress.
The NBBF signed the two- year contract with the coach Friday ahead of the 27th FIBA Africa Women’s Championship scheduled for Rwanda from July 28 to August 6.
Wakama, a Rivers State indigene played for the National team and currently serves as an assistant coach at Stony Brooks University, U.S.
The NBBF said;
“Wakama was a four-year letterman at the University of Western Carolina and played professional basketball in the United Kingdom, in addition to playing for the senior Nigerian national team.
“Wakama received a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina in 2014 and an MBA from Manhattan in 2019.”
. The new Coach is expected to sustain the winning streak of Africa’s No 1, D’ Tigress as they prepare to defend their hold on the Trophy later this month.
The D’Tigress won the trophy in 2017 and has since remained unbeaten by any African team at any venue across the world.
They made it to the quarterfinal stage of the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain, beating teams regarded as super powers .
