Nigerian Airforce Guards on Friday Arrested a man suspected to belong to a gang of cable thieves attempting to steal underground armoured cable serving the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The suspect and his colleagues were sighted around the airport perimeter fence area by the Airforce guards on duty as they dug the underground cable belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Confirming the incident,tha Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection ( FAAN) Abdullahi Yakubu Funtua said that the thieves took to their heels on sighting the NAF guards .
He said one of the guards opened fire on them and hit one of the suspects identified as Usman Musa, a native of Nasarawa State residing at Ijora, Lagos
He said Musa 28, sustained gunshot wounds and was subsequently arrested and taken to 66 NAF Hospital, Ikeja .
According to him, the suspect is presently receiving treatment at the General Hospital,Oyingbo while his accomplices escaped.
He said that Usman Musa will be properly interrogated after he has stabilised adding that the Authority believes that the incident could be a relevant clue to the theft of the Runway lighting at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport MMIA, Ikeja.
Two weeks ago , some airfield lighting cables were stolen at the runway of the MMIA’s international wing.
The airport had in recent times recorded security breaches with unauthorised persons accessing the airport through the perimeter fence areas, prompting a series of security measures by the authorities.
