After nearly seven weeks in DSS custody, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) Mr Godwin Emefiele has been granted bail.
Emefiele was granted bail on Tuesday by a Federal High Court in Lagos in the sum of N20 million and a surety in like sum following a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearm levelled against him by the Department of State Service, DSS.
The suspended governor of the Apex bank pleaded not guilty to the two – count charge after which his lawyer, Joseph Daudu, applied for his bail, contending that the offense for which Emefiele was charged is bailable.
Consequently, the trial Judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted the embattled bank Chief Executive bail on grounds that the offence is bailable.
The DSS had arrested Emefiele in Lagos on June 9 after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.
He was flown to Abuja where he was interrogated and charged to court after a high court in the Federal Capital Territory FCT asked the DSS to either charge him to court or release him on grounds of exercise of his fundamental human rights.
