The Federal Government has filed a contempt proceeding against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for defying an order restraining the unions from embarking on industrial action.
The suit “notice of consequences of disobedience to order of the court” also called “form 48” was filed before the national industrial court in Abuja on Wednesday.
The NLC and the affiliate unions embarked on strike in major cities across the country.
There were protests in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt,Taraba and others..
The Labour unions had following the removal of fuel subsidy threatened to go on strike if the Federal Government failed to address their demands which include, immediate distribution of palliatives, raise in wages of civil servants and others.
But the National Industrial Court in Abuja on 5 June,gave an order restraining the NLC, the Trade Union Congress TUC and their affiliates from embarking on strike over subsidy removal..
Similarly,the Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice , Beatrice Jeddy – Agba recently issued a warning to the Labour unions through their lawyer,, Femi Falana against embarking on the strike
But the unions decided to mobilize their members to protest against what they called anti – poor policies and called for immediate reversal of subsidy removal.
