Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, President Bola Tinubu, has dispatched a three-man delegation to Niger Republic headed by former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto , Sa’ad Abubakar lll and the President of ECOWAS Commission,H.E Omar Alieu Touray.
The delegation which already left for Niamey, the Nigerien capital after meeting with President Tinubu had the mandate to expeditiously resolve the current political impasse in the country.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the development was in line with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held on Sunday in Abuja.
President Tinubu also sent a separate delegation led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger issue.
The president who briefed the two delegations, charged them to engage all stakeholders with a view to ensure amicable resolution of the situation in Niger and safeguard peace in the region.
“We don’t want to hold brief for anybody. Our concern is democracy and the peace of the region,” he said.
Leaders of the delegations in their remarks expressed optimism about the outcome of their mission.
