The Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Roseline Apawari Uranta has been inaugurated as the Matron of the Nigerian Girl Guides Association of Rivers State Branch.
Performing the inauguration in Port Harcourt Today,the National Chairman Trefoil Guides of the Association, Dame (Dr) Christie said that the appointment was in recognition of Dr Uranta’s position as the State Commissioner for Women Affairs.
Dr Toby who is also the Wife of a former Deputy Governor of Rivers State said “by this appointment, Dr Uranta, you are now a member of the Association and you are a role model to the girls and young women”.
She further said, ” your appointment as a Commissioner in charge of Women Affairs is not a mistake but a divine arrangement to offer leadership to the women of Rivers State “.
The Wife of the former Deputy Governor told the Commissioner that by her appointment as a Matron she now has the sole responsibility to be ” a go between the Wife of the State Governor and the Association “, saying ” your role is now double “.
She added, ” you are hereby commissioned as an Ambassador for the Association “.
Responding, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Roseline Apawari Uranta thanked the Association for appointing her as the Matron.
Dr Uranta reiterated her commitment to the Association and said, ” I will always throw my support to the Association to excel in their programmes and activities “.
The Commissioner continued, ” I will on my honour continue to promote virtues that will encourage the girl child and enhance the development of young women in all human endeavours “.
The Commissioner disclosed that the Association would be given a special position in the Women Development Centre to be commissioned soon to enable members acquire skills to empower them economically.
Earlier in her speech, the State Commissioner of the Association, Lady Daba Harry commended Dr Uranta for accepting to be their Matron and described the gesture as honourable and pheasant.
Harry who said the Association as a leading World-Wide organization in moulding the character and skills of young girls was committed to nurture the girl child into responsible and empowered citizens in the society.
She remarked ” Honourable Matron, your presence as a guiding light will inspire our Girl Guides to reach for greater heights and instill in them values of courage, integrity and service to humility “.
Highlight of the occasion was the decorating of the Commissioner with the Association Matron by the National Trefoil Chairman, Dame (Dr) Christie Toby and the State Trefoil Co-Ordinator, Mrs Joyce Jamabo assisted by the State Girl Guides Commissioner, Lady Daba Harry.
