In furtherance of the diplomatic option to the crisis in Niger Republic, the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS,President Bola Tinubu has approved the return of a delegation of Islamic leaders (Ulama) to Niger Republic for another round of dialogue with the coupists.
The president made the decision on Thursday after a meeting with the top clerics led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi who were recently in Niamey, the Niger Republic capital, for dialogue with General Abdourahamane Tiani,Head of the Junta.
ECOWAS had settled for a military action on Niger in the event of failure to persuade the military to return to democratic order .
The junta seized power from President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023 and had held him captive since then boldly ignoring calls for his release and reinstatement.
Last week after a meeting with the ECOWAS emissaries, General Abdulsalam Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar lll, the Junta announced a three year transition plan but ECOWAS reportedly rejected the military position.
