The International Human Rights Protection Services (IHRPS) recently paid a courtesy call to the office of Honorable Commissioner of the Ministry of Human Affairs ,Dr. Roseline Apawari Uranta, in a bid to strengthen collaboration and promote human rights initiatives in Rivers State.
The meeting took place on the 24th of August, 2023 at the Hon. Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Ministry of Women Affairs Building Complex.
Addressing the group, the Dr. Apawari Uranta expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized the importance of international partnerships in advancing human rights agendas.
She attested “our esteemed governor, Sir Sim Fubara is a gender- sensitive leader who is investing in women and children as well as protecting their rights The commissioner gave an example of the governor’s, as well as her ministry’s, efforts towards gender sensitization. This , she said was the recent development of a Databased violence Dashboard Program intended to facilitate the record and registration of women’s rights violations. She explained that individuals are advised to register their issues for it to be handled effectively.
Dr Apawari- Uranta who acknowledged the valuable expertise and resources that the IHRPS brings to the table, expressed her commitment towards working closely with the organization to address human rights challenges in Rivers State.
During the visit, the Chairperson of the IHRPS, Rt. Hon. Irene Kaladappa Jumbo engaged in a fruitful discussion with the Uranta and her team, highlighting the objectives of the IHRPS as an organization geared towards protection and empowerment of women and children through legal policies for human rights enforcement and aid facilitation where necessary.
On his part, the Director of Legal Affairs for the IHRPS, Mr. Silas Chinna advocated for the sensitization of women as well as enforcement of human rights especially in the area of abuse cases,,stigmatization and trafficking adding that many countries are ahead of Nigeria in their drive to protect and provide for vulnerable groups in society.many countries are ahead of Nigeria in their drive to protect and provide for vulnerable groups in society. . The legal director emphasized the need to partner with the ministry to fight the menace.
The courtesy call provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore potential areas of collaboration. Discussions centered around key human rights issues such as access to justice, equality, non-discrimination, and the protection of vulnerable groups-particularly women.
The meeting ended with the commissioner and the IHRPS delegation reaffirming their commitment to upholding human rights principles and fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and equality in Rivers State.
