As the Nigerian political landscape continues to roil with controversies and bold policy decisions, two prominent figures have taken the center stage, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
and Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State. The recent removal of the fuel subsidy has brought their clashing viewpoints to the forefront, revealing a stark contrast in their priorities and leadership styles. While Tinubu seems focused on pressing the necks of Nigerians, Obaseki might want to take a moment to consider his own state before being “shocked.”
President Tinubu’s move to remove the fuel subsidy has been met with a mix of skepticism and outrage. Many Nigerians find themselves struggling to wrap their heads around the justification for removing a subsidy that, for years, has provided some semblance of relief to the average citizen. In his quest to reduce the government’s budget deficit and attract investments to the oil and gas sector, and of course Tinubu seems to have conveniently overlooked the immediate impact on the masses.
Now, whilst the outspoken critic of Tinubu’s approach, Governor Godwin Obaseki, may be busy sharing his “shock” at Tinubu’s lack of a plan, one can’t help but wonder if Obaseki has forgotten about the state he governs. Edo State, under his leadership, faces its own set of challenges, including dilapidated infrastructure, a struggling healthcare system, and an education sector in dire need of revitalization. Perhaps Obaseki should shift his gaze from Tinubu’s politics and turn it towards his own backyard whilst he still can.
Obaseki’s concern for the citizens affected by the fuel subsidy removal is indeed admirable, but before he offers advice to others, he should ask himself whether he has provided an adequate cushion for his own state. After all, ensuring the welfare of his constituents should be his utmost priority. Rather than expressing shock, Obaseki should be engaging with Edo State stakeholders to create solutions that will truly alleviate the impact of this policy shift on his people.
The intricacies of the fuel subsidy removal are not lost on anyone. Both Tinubu and Obaseki are undoubtedly intelligent individuals who understand the implications of their actions. However, both seem to be playing a political chess game while the real victims – the ordinary Nigerians, are left grappling with the aftermath. It’s high time these leaders put aside their ideological differences and focus on the collective well-being of the people they are meant to serve.
In a political landscape filled with theatrics and shifting blame. perhaps it’s time for both Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Godwin Obaseki to take a step back and reassess their priorities. While Tinubu’s bold policy moves raise questions about his empathy for the masses, Obaseki’s shock and concern might be better directed at his own state. The citizens of Nigeria, whether they are dealing with subsidy removal or neglected governance, deserve leaders who prioritize their interests over political theatrics. It’s time for both Tinubu and Obaseki to rise above the noise, address the real issues, and prove that leadership is not just about talking but also about effective action.
