The Federal Government has reached a two – week agreement with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to give the President Bola Tinubu-led administration address some of the grievances of the Labour union
The agreement comes as the TUC’s allied congress, the Nigeria Labour Congress and some of its affiliate unions embark on a two – day warning strike to compel the federal government to address their demands bordering on the current economic challenges
News of the agreement was made known by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Solomon Lalong, at the end of a meeting with the leadership of TUC led by, Comrade Festus Osifo on Tuesday in Abuja.
The Minister had convened the meeting to resolve the TUC’s and NiLC’ differences with government .
According to Lalong, the issues for which a two-week timeline was set for their resolution include wage award for federal civil servants to cushion the effect of rising poverty among them, and tax exemption for a certain level of workers, both in the public and private sectors.
The TUC had pulled out of the two day strike which began on Tuesday saying the windows of dialogue were yet to be exhausted
Its president,Usifo after meeting with Lalong said,
” As of today, the need to embark on a nationwide strike hasn’t arisen hence the leadership of congress should intensify the conversation with the government so that all grey areas identified could be ironed out within the timeframe given.
Reports by our correspondents revealed little success in the NLC’s move to persuade workers to protest in some states .
