As Nigeria observes independence Day, the Organised Labour has resolved to embark on an indefinite strike over the failure of government to provide palliatives that address the current economic challenges resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy.
Leaders of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress TUC had shunned a meeting with the Federal Government to stop its proposed strike fixed from Tuesday, October 3.
The leadership of the two unions earlier complained about government insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians as they pointed out that the federal government anti -poor policies were biting hard on Nigerianns without any corresponding palliative measures to cushion the effect.
They also said that previous discussions on the matter had ended in a deadlock.
Current matters obtained letters from Various unions asking their members to mobilise for the strike.
One of such letters was from the Trade Union Congress TUC dated September 28,2023.
On its part, the National Union of Electricity Employees are asking their members for total withdrawal of service from October 3. to participate in street protests until government meets their demands.
The Non – Academic Staff Union has also directed its members nationwide to embark on” total and comprehensive strike action with a view to getting the Federal Government to react positively to the demands of Labour.”
For the Nigerien Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, it finds it so disturbing and unfortunate that the Federal Government and other tiers of government are so insensitive to the excruciating and debilitating socio – economic pain Nigerians are passing through as a result of very harsh sudden economic policies by this administration without any accompanying socio – economic palliatives to ameliorate and cushion the immediate effects and impacts those difficult and harsh policies are having on the citizenry”
The Radio, Television , Theatre and Arts Workers Uniion RATTAWU has also directed all chapters nationwide to embark on strike .
According to RATTAWU, ” He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it “
The National Union of Nurses and Midwives has also directed its members nationwide to embark on strike with effect from Tuesday October 3 2023.
A statement from its headquarters said that the directive is in line with the resolution of the Nigeria Labour Union.
However, current matters gathered that the government may announce a shocker to the organised Labour on Independence Day.
It was learnt that the President,Bola Ahmed Tinubu who jetted into the country on Friday evening since his outing at the United Nations General Assembly UNGA in New York will announce breathtaking palliatives that would make the workers shelve the idea of embarking on strike.
