The Senate on Friday, asked the Federal Government to withhold statutory allocations to any local government councils not democratically elected.
The move it said would deter the dictatorial tendencies of state Governors.
The resolution of the upper legislative chamber comes after Sen. Abba Moro( PDP Benue South) and Minority Leader, moved a motion on the urgent need to stop the erosion of democracy citing the dissolution of elected Councils in Benue State by Governor Hyacinth Alia
Moro argued that the replacement of elected councils with Caretaker Committees constituted a breach of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Seconding the motion,Senator Victor Umeh (APGA Anambra Central) lamented that the issue has continued to undermine the local government system in Nigeria.
The lawmakers therefore condemned the arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected Local government councils in Benue and other states of the federation.
They urged the Benue state Governor to obey the rule of law, and reinstate the elected councils.
