Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, Godwin Emefiele on Saturday morning left the Kuje Prison after meeting the court’s N300million bail condition.
Emefiele was suspended from office in June this year over allegations bordering on financial crimes
He was arrested by the Department of State Services DSS barely 24 hours after his suspension and was in custody until he was charged to court for N1.2 billion procurement Fraud. He was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal High Court, Abuja in November in the sum of N300 million and two sureties in like sum . The sureties must have certificate of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitaima District , the judge said.
In addition, Emefiele was mandated to deposit all his travel documents with the registrar of the court and remain within the Abuja Municipal Council.
But Emefiele could not meet the bail condition and was remanded in the Kuje Prison until Saturday morning when he breathed the air of freedom.
Current matters understands that his release warrant was signed by Justice Othman Musa,a vacation judge on December 22.
The former CBN governor who is facing trial on a six – count charge for financial offences is expected to face more criminal charges as fresh accusations have mounted against him.
According to Jim Obazee, the Special Investigator engaged by President Bola Tinubu to probe the CBN, Emefiele stashed away several billions of tax payers money to 593 accounts abroad.
Emefiele was also said to have used proxies to purchase two banks for himself.
