The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the election of Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State overruling the judgment of the Court of Appeal which earlier voided his election and declared the All Progressives Congress APC candidate, Yusuf Gawuna as the winner
Delivering the judgement on Friday, a panel of five justices led by Justice Inyang Okoro said that the Court of Appeal did not understand the significance of the purported 165,616 ballots papers that were deducted from Governor Yusuf’s votes.
On the issue that Governor Yusuf was not sponsored by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the court said that the issue was a pre-election matter.
“This court has consistently maintained that the issue of nomination of sponsorship of a candidate for an election is completely an exclusive prerogative of the political party.” Justice Okoro said
