One person has been reported dead and scores injured in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State following resistance to the end of the tenure of local government council Chairmen and replacement of Heads of Local Government Administration .
Gov Siminilayi Fubara, in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday morning dissolved the council citing the Nigerian constitution on the tenure of local government administration and directed’ the Heads of Local Government Administration to immediately step in and take charge of the council affairs.
But shortly after the broadcast, the youths in Omuma including members of a vigilante group,OSPAC mobilised to protect the council.
Current matters gathered that on getting to the council, they met with a group of armed thugs allegedly led by the member representing Etche/ Omuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Kelechi Nwogu who unleashed mayhem on the protesting youths.
The hoodlums loyal to the Former governor and serving minister, Nyesom Wike shot at the youths killing one member of the Vigilante group on the spot.
A source who pleaded anonymity told current matters that no fewer than ten persons were seriously wounded while a house to house search to fish out the protesters by the Kelechi and alleged thugs are underway in the area.
When asked if there were law enforcement agencies in the area, the source said ” We did not see any” We don’t know when all this will stop. Why should anyone elongate the tenure of local government areas? It’s just like a governor or president serving out his tenure and you asked him to stay for 6 more months, it’s unconstitutional ” he said.
However, in the sister local government council, Etche, our reporter said no protests were recorded today . He confirmed the presence of some policemen around the council area.
