Port Harcourt, Rivers State, 4th October 2024 – On the eve of the Rivers State Local Government elections, the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has released a statement addressing the recent developments surrounding the electoral process, expressing concerns about potential interference.
The Council noted that there were reports of some policemen allegedly attempting to gain unauthorized access to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office, which has raised public concern. The Traditional Rulers have also reacted to the Rivers State Police Command’s decision not to provide security for the elections, which are scheduled to take place on Saturday, 5th October.
In their statement, the Council called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by ensuring that law enforcement agencies uphold neutrality in the electoral process. They also encouraged politicians to prioritize the stability of Rivers State over personal ambitions, urging them to act responsibly to prevent any escalation of tension.
The Traditional Rulers further appealed to residents not to be discouraged by the current situation, asking eligible voters to participate in the elections in large numbers and exercise their democratic rights. The statement also urged the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to conduct the elections with integrity and fairness, in line with global standards.
In addition, the Council called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to maintain his commitment to peace, even in the face of provocative circumstances, emphasizing the need for leadership that preserves the stability and unity of the state.
The message, signed by His Majesty, King Chike Anderson A. Worlu Wodo, Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, and Dr. Ogwuokwa Matthew Jonah, Secretary to the Council, aims to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully, transparently, and in the best interests of the people of Rivers State.
