British politician, Kemi Badenoch, on Saturday, replaced Rishi Sunak as Leader of the Conservative Party.
The party announced her win in a post on X on Saturday.
It tweeted”ANNOUNCED @KemiBadenoch has been elected Leader of the Conservative Party,” the party tweeted.
The 44-year-old politician becomes the first black woman to lead the Tories.
She defeated Robert Jenrick after a four-month contest, sparked by Sunak’s resignation in the wake of a humiliating election defeat.
The vote saw a turnout of 72%, according to Conservative MP, Bob Blackman.
Badenoch was elected to the London Assembly in 2015 and to Parliament in 2017. She also held several government posts under Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. She was appointed Trade Secretary under the brief government of Prime Minister,Liz Truss and Business Secretary under Prime Minister,Rishi Sunak.
The new Tory party leader was born Olukemi Adegoke to Nigerian parents in London in 1980.
