Republicans Senators on Wednesday elected John Thune, the Senator representing South Dakota as Senate Majority Leader.
Thune was elected leader in a secret ballot in Washington putting to rest that the upper chamber would elect a key supporter of the president – elect, Donald Trump for the position.
The 63- year- old who was first elected into the Senate in 2024 received endorsements prior to the vote from fellow South Dakota U.S. Sens. Mike Rounds and Sen. Steve Dannes of Montana,Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota.according to South Dakota News Watch and The Associated Press.
Thune most recently, served as Republican whip, the No 2 in the Senate and replaced Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Thune defeated Sen. Rick Scott who was eliminated at the first round of election and Sen. John Cornyn to win the Majority leadership seat.
