Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will step down as the country’s prime minister, l once a new ruling party leader is chosen.
Trudeau made the announcement at a Press Conference on Monday January 6,.outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Canada .
He said ” I intend to resign as party leader,as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader”
His resignation followed a series of crises including a 20% tariff threats by the US President – elect, Donald Trump and internal issues resulting in the resignation of key officials .
Trump had consistently referred to Trudeau as governor of the 51st state of the US, and preferred the opposition candidate, Pierre Poillevre,leader of the Conservative Party to be in the saddle.
Trudeau also announced that Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 24 while a new leader is chosen.
The Canadian PM has been the leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years and prime minister for nine.
Trudeau, the first son of former PM Pierre Elliot Trudeau was elected to Parliament in 2008 before becoming leader of the Liberal Party.
The 53- year – year old told the press about his” one regret” which is “But I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice, or a third choice on the same ballot.”
