The Rivers State House of Assembly on Wednesday morning put its gate under lock and key after it received a letter from Gov. Siminilayi Fubara addressed to the Speaker,Martins Amaewhule notifying the Honourable Members of the House of his intent to meet with them to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill
The presentation of the Budget was one of the high points of the Supreme Court judgement delivered by a five – member panel of justices on February 28,2025.
In compliance with the Apex Court verdict, Gov. Fubara invited the lawmakers to a meeting in Government House where he was to present the budget and clear other pending matters including their allowances.
But the lawmakers ,who were recently reinstated by the Supreme Court after their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP to the All Progressives Congress APC was publicly captured, and also embraced by President Bola Tinubu shunned the governor’s invitation for a meeting referring to the olive branch as an insult.
In his avowed commitment to ensuring peace in the state,Gov Fubara further forwarded another letter he personally signed to the Assembly of his visit to present the budget on Wednesday , March 12, at 10 am. He subsequently arrived at the Assembly, but surprisingly met a locked gate.
” This is an insult to the office of Governor,a bystander simply called Mike said
Another Bystander, Nnamdi said, Wike thinks he will rule Rivers forever,he has failed. He blamed President Bola Tinubu for aiding the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory
” If there’s any problem in Rivers State,it is Wike. Tinubu also has a hand because he’s supporting Wike to do whatever he likes.”
On Tuesday, March 11, Tinubu hosted a delegation of Niger Delta Leaders where he told them to urge Gov Fubara to implement the supreme court judgement. The President was however silent on cautioning Wike on the rule of law.
As of now, the atmosphere is tense but the governor has said he would go back to the Assembly to present the Budget no matter how many times his office has been denigrated assuring them that nothing will go wrong.
