US President, Joe Biden’s decision to implement the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan has been receiving mixed reactions especially with the capture of provinces and the capital Kabul leading to chaos at the Kabul airport.
President Biden on Monday in the tone of one caught between two extremes, sobered by the chaotic humanitarian crisis caused by troops withdrawal but standing by the tough decision taken to save American soldiers from further fighting and further deaths.
Some of the critics of the Biden administration said that though they agreed with the withdrawal initiative, yet the president could have exercised more patience considering the chaos the immediate withdrawal would cause to American citizens and Afghan allies in the country.
However, many agreed with Biden’s stand arguing that America cannot continue to spoon-feed a country unwilling to take giant steps to help itself.
According to Melville a social commentator,” though the current situation in Afghanistan is most unfortunate and disturbing, the Afghan people who are traumatised by America’s withdrawal ought to have taken proactive step by protecting their country from another round of Taliban rule knowing that America will leave someday.
” Why didn’t the Afghan Military resist the Talibans? The Afghan Military with their President should have immediately come up with a plan to forestall any crisis that American withdrawal could cause.
In 2020, the Trump administration made a peace deal with the Taliban that encouraged power sharing between Aghan government and the Talibans but this recorded little success.
.
In April,Biden announced that withdrawal would be concluded by August 31 . However, the situation in Afghanistan revealed that the collapse of the Afghan government would come more quickly than expected.
As of Monday evening, most Americans are reportedly trapped and were unable to make it to the crowded International Airport in Kabul. The local allies who are fleeing the country for fear of Taliban attack were seen taking unusual and deadly steps climbing and falling off the Airforce Cargo plane to runaway from the death they fear in the hands of the Taliban soldiers..
On Sunday, ousted President Ghani fled the country to an unknown destination leaving the impression he might have been sidelined or the Talibans may have infiltrated the ranks of the military.
US occupation of Afghanistan began in 2001 following the 9 /11 bombing in the States traced to Osama Bill Laden who was offered protection by the Taliban government. The Talibans who were disengaged by the American government never gave up on control of the country as they moved to the Pakistan border and restrategised to take over the government.
