The Nigerian Senate has passed the much canvased Bill granting autonomy to local government councils in the country.
At Tuesday’s plenary, ninety- two members voted overwhelmingly in support of the Bill.
Sponsor of the Bill,Munsur Manu Soro ( APC,,) representing Darazo Ganjuwa Federal constituency while leading the debate in the House of Representatives in February,2020 , had stated that the Bill intended to right the wrongs in view of” monumental development”expected at the grass roots and bring back to position, the original idea neccesitating the creation of the third thier government.
Soro who cited the underdevelopment of local government areas across the country and the greed of governors towards the LGA funds said that “the present reality is a great contrast with the provisions of the Constitution, Politically, the local government lack autonomy as the state governments interfere in their elections.
‘ Administratively, the local government lack independent as the state governments determine their staff recruitment and discipline, Financially, the local government councils are not independent as their funds are often withheld by the state governments through the state joint accounts”
The Bill also enjoyed the support of majority of members.
