Today, modern technology plays a significant role in increasing food production, in the way food is processed, as well as the manner it is packaged.
The Rector, Dr Shehu Salisu Umar, said the use of new and emerging technologies to improve food processing and packaging, has been proven empirically to improve food safety, as well as shelf life.
He explained, “At Auchi Polytechnic, our Food Technology Department remains the most sophisticated across the nation as it boast of some of the most modern machineries in food processing and packaging”..
“In our drive to enhance our capacity, we are embarking on the construction of a central laboratory for the school of applied sciences”.
Dr Umar noted that,
“Our Food Technology Department held its Food Day and Exhibition today, (Wednesday) with the Theme: “Food and Wealth”, with an array of healthy processed foods and a number of other items on exhibition”.
The Rector thanked the Head Department of Food Technology, Dr. Odion-Owase E., the Dean, School of Applied Sciences, Mr. Efosa John, for making the exhibition a successful one.
“It is also important to note that we are training our students and empowering our staff in the use of modern technology in food processing, this is because the use of new trends and breakthroughs help those involved in food manufacturing to be more efficient and effective. We believe in the use of machines as this often drive the price of food commodities southwards. We are poised as an institution to offer solutions in this regard”, Dr Shehu Salisu Umar concluded.
