Football legend, Edison Arantes do Nascimento popularly known as Pele is dead.
He was 82.
Pele’s daughter,Kely Nascimento had posted a photo of the deceased football star in what appears to be his last moments with his family in the hospital Thursday accompanied by a short statement indicating his passing ” Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace”
Pele began his football career at age 15 scoring in a 7-1 win for his club, Santos over Corinthians de Santos Andre. He made appearance for his country at the World Cup at age 17 and became the only player in World Soccer history to lift the trophy three times. He won the tournament in 1958,1962 and 1970.
He had an eventful football career that spanned over two decades., scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances including 77 goals in 92 matches for Brazil.
As a mark of recognition for his exploits in Football,Pele was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.
Pele was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo Brazil in September 2022 and had surgery to remove tumour from his colon. He was readmitted to hospital in late November after his condition worsened .
