Despite the directive issued by the Enugu State Government stopping the Indigenous peoples of Biafra Stay home order, Residents of the state on Monday defied the directive and stayed at home
Reports by our correspondent indicate that business premises, schools and markets were closed while streets were empty in adherence to IPOB’s order which has been in place for about 2 years.
On June 1, The State Governor, Peter Mbah declared after meeting with security heads that the sit -at -home in Enugu was over ,effective Monday, June 5, saying the development was having adverse effects on economic activities in the state and urged residents to resume normal business activities
” Consequently, from Monday, June 6,2023, there will be no observance of any sit – at – home in all nooks and crannies of Enugu State”
According to him, “the government will enforce this with all the powers at its disposal “
But in spite of the government’s attempt to resume full scale business activities in the state, residents felt it was safer to heed the order of the proscribed IPOB and stay – at – home than responding to the governor’s call.
A trader, Mrs Mba told our correspondent that it was better for her to stay at home than to” fall into the hands of IPOB members and die”.
“Every Monday or any other day that sit- at- home order is given, no one moves around. We have seen corpses of people who go to markets or try to travel on the streets and the risk isn’t worth it” She said
IPOB and its Military wing, Eastern Security Network ( ESN) enforced the sit- at- home on Mondays and other days their leader, Nnamdi Kanu goes to court.
But with the defiance of the directive stopping the order,it is unclear what Mbah would do to get the attention of those who have genuine grievances so as to foster lasting peace and security in Enugu State.
