As part of activities marking the Maternal and Child Health Month of Rotary International, The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco under District 9141 has donated free insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets, antenatal medications, Oral Rehydration Salts, Zinc tablets, and packs of Methylated spirit, to some nursing mothers at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Igwuruta, Ikwerre local government area.
Other items donated are Paracetamol, Albendazole Savlon, Hand gloves and other medical items.
The President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Dr. Anthony Ikpor charged the mothers to ensure they sleep inside the mosquito bed nets donated to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Nigeria.
He explained that the immunity of children are not as strong as the adults and as such they should be protected from diseases
Representative of the Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Igwuruta, Ikwerre local government area, Dr. Sokeipirim Akoko while receiving members of the Club and their donations, expressed joy over the Club’s decision to pick the Health Centre for such an intervention and promised that the items donated shall be put into good use for the benefit of the patients of the community..
The Chairman of the Maternal and Child Health Committee of the Club, Dr. Bieye Renner Briggs, gave health talk on diarrhoea, malaria and the need for pregnant women to register for antenatal care and attend antenatal clinics to ensure positive pregnancy outcomes.
Over 70 pregnant and nursing mothers and 50 children benefitted from the intervention project carried out by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco. One of the beneficiaries, Chituru Weje, on behalf of other beneficiaries thanked the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco for the gesture. She said the donations have given many mothers hope and saved them from mental health issues as a result of not being able to afford some of the items needed..
The Chief Matron of the Health Centre, Mrs. Chioma Mpigi while giving her vote of thanks, expressed her delight for such an intervention and prayed God to bless the Club and its members immensely.
