Chiefs of Defence Staff from Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS will meet in Ghana this week to discuss action on Niger Republic current matters understands.
Last week, the meeting of ECOWAS Defence Chiefs in Ghana scheduled for Thursday and Friday was postponed after leaders of the regional block in their second extraordinary meeting in Abuja asked the military to be on standby following failure of diplomatic options for Niger.
Leaders are demanding the release and reinstatement of President Mohammed Bazoum who was ousted from office in a Military coup led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, a former Chief of the Presidential Guards on July 26,2023.
ECOWAS had after issuing a 7 day ultimatum to the Junta to restore democratic order also imposed biting sanctions making the coupists announce that they are keen for dialogue.
But just when leaders were beginning to see a glimmer of hope in furtherance of diplomacy, the coupists slammed Terrorism charges on Bazoum,who is still being held under house arrest along with members of his family.
