The Nigeria Labour Congres (NLC) has declared a two-day warning strike, from Tuesday, September 5.
The decision it was learnt was reached by the union on Friday following the Federal Government’s failure to address the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
President Bola Tinubu had during his inaugural speech on 29 May announced the end of fuel subsidy and went ahead to constitute committees to handle effective handling of palliatives the government promised to distribute to cushion the impact of the removal of subsidy.
But the NLC and the Trade Union Congress TUC said that the committees were operating at a snail speed and issued a 7- day ultimatum to the government beginning July 26 to end what it called the anti – poor policies including the removal of the fuel subsidy, hike in electricity Tariffs and astronomical increase in school fees or face strike.
In August, President Tinubu disbursed N5billiion palliative with thousands of bags of rice to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory FCT .
The Nigerian Governor’s Forum, NGF current matters gathered also distributed over 16,000 bags of rice to each state of the country.
But in all these, nothing tangible had been allocated to the public workers.
The workers Union had demanded an upward review of the 30,000 minimum wage to N200,000 and several meetings between the unions and the government representatives have yielded no forward direction .
