
The Senate has barred first – term Senators from seeking the office of the president of the Senate and Deputy President.
This followed the amendment of rule 3(2)(1-3) of the Senate Standing Committee Orders following a motion titled” Amendment of the Standing Committee Orders of the Senate pursuant to Order 109 of the Senate Standing Orders,2022( As Amended)”moved by the Leader of the Senate,Senator Opeyemi Bamidele ( APC Ekiti Central).
Going by the new amendment to the standing orders of the Senate, first-term senators are not eligible to contest for the position of presiding officers of the Senate
According to Rule 3 of the Senate Standing Orders as amended , any senator wishing to contest for the position of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President must have spent a minimum of one term in the senate.
The development came a few months after Senator, Abdulaziz Yari, a first – termer contested against Godswill Akpabio, a ranked Senator for the position of Senate president.
