The Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile Ife in Osun state was on Monday afternoon thrown into mourning following the killing of a staff,Mr Olabode Olawuyi by a nine – year -old male lion.
The . deceased,a veterinary technologist was said to have taken care of the lions since they were born nine years ago
A statement issued by the Spokesman of the University , Abiodun Olarewaju said ” Olawuyi was a veterinary technologist who has been in charge of the zoological garden for over a decade was attacked this afternoon, Wednesday 19 February ,2024 by a – nine – year – old male lion when he was feeding them in their den at the zoological garden of the university.”
” The other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss, but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities “
The statement quoted the acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre,Dr Tirimisiyu Olarunji as saying that ” all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive ” adding that “the aggressive lion has been euthanised” .
Meanwhile, the University has sent a delegation to the home of the deceased to condole with the widow and children while the Vice Chancellor has ordered a comprehensive probe of the incident , the statement reveals.
