The Governor of Niger State Umar Bago,has announced a N250 million scholarship award to a Kano – based Trycyclist( Keke driver), Auwalu, who returned N15m forgotten by a passenger in his commercial tricycle..
Auwalu had returned the money to the passenger who came from Chad to buy some goods in Kano after he learnt of the missing money on Radio.
Bago made the announcement at the Leadership Awards and Conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the governor who bagged the co – Governor of the Year award, the scholarship which covers Auwalu’s first degree to Doctorate, was given on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC,, the Ministers, the Niger State government and on behalf of himself and his family.
“I am the first son of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and as such, we cannot allow Baze University to outshine us,” he said.
“So, on behalf of the president in his capacity, Auwalu, we are giving you a scholarship of N50m; on behalf of the governors of the APC, we are giving you additional N50m; on behalf of the ministers of the APC, N50m; on behalf of the ministers of the APC, N50m; on behalf of Niger State government of Niger State, N50m; on behalf of myself and my family, N50m. So, Auwalu, we have dashed you N250m as a scholarship to go and do your PhD.”
Bago’s gesture came after the Presidential candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 election,Mr Peter Obi and his running mate ,Datti Baba – Ahmed offered Auwalu scholarship in Baze university .
Obi who received the Politician of the Year award said the scholarship covers Tuition, Feeding and Accommodation until his graduation from the institution.
Obi also lamented Nigeria’s dependence on the import of food items adding that with the vast landmass, the country has every reason to be self sufficient in food production.
