The House of Assembly in Edo state has served an impeachment notice to the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu over allegations of misconduct.
The lawmakers also gave the Deputy Governor 7 days to respond to the allegations levelled against him.
Shaibu, a former member of the House of Representatives, and former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), had been having a running battle with Governor Godwin Obaseki, over the governorship succession in the state.
Trouble between the two men started when the deputy governor could not secure the governor’s support to emerge the candidate of the party in the September Governorship election.
However,Obaseki reportedly backed Asue Ighodalo,a lawyer and banker to emerge the candidate of the party in a primary conducted at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium Benin city, while Shaibu also emerged candidate in a parallel congress conducted elsewhere in the state capital.
The Peoples Democratic Party had in recognition of his success at the primary, given the Certificate of Return to Ighodalo but Shaibu stormed the PDP headquarters to claim that he was the authentic candidate of the party and that only his candidacy could guarantee the party’s success in the governorship election in September.
Shaibu was also reported to have threatened the party with a legal action if it failed to address the issue.
