Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN,Mr Godwin Emefiele is to appear before Justice Maryann Anenih of a Federal High Court in Abuja on April 30 in defence of a four count charge against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC.
The anti-graft agency in the counts,accused Emefiele of approving the printing of N684,590,000 notes at the rate of N18.96 billion.
It alleged that Emefiele broke the law with intent to harm the public during his implementation of the naira swap policy under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The EFCC also accused the former CBN governor of unlawfully approving the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the consolidated revenue fund of the federation.
Emefiele was suspended from office in June 2023 and had been under the radar of law enforcement agency and anti graft agency .
This would be the third criminal case filed against Emefiele the first being on November17,2023 when he was arraigned before Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT court on 6 -count charge of procurement fraud which has since been amended to 20 counts bordering on alleged criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud and conspiracy to commit a felony.
On allegations of $4.5billion and N2.8 billion fraud , the EFCC on April 8 arraigned Emefiele alongside an official of the apex bank, Henry Omoile before Rahman Oshodi of the special offences court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos .
