Richard” Rick” Slayman, the first person in the world to receive a pig kidney transplant has died barely two months after the surgery.
Slayman 62 ,who was living with end – stage kidney disease was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital MGH where a genetically – edited pig kidney was transplanted into him.
The surgery was successful and hit medical journals and global media headlines.
According to Joren C. Madsen,MD,DPhil, Director of the MGH Transplant Centre ” The real hero today is the patient,Mr Slayman,as the success of this pioneering surgery once deemed unimaginable, would not have been possible without his courage and willingness to embark on a journey into uncharted medical territory.

Slayman ‘s new kidney has begun urine production, marking a promising step forward, while he’s also actively mobile in the hospital, hinting at a potential imminent discharge, a statement by the MGH had said.
