The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje says he will not hesitate to sign the death warrant for the execution of singer, Yahaya Shariff-Aminu
Ganduje who made this known after a meeting of stakeholders on the sentence passed on the singer, affirmed that his government had accepted the verdict and the rule of law surrounding the case.
He said”We will not waste time in signing the warrant for the execution of the man who blasphemed our Holy Prophet of Islam”
According to him, the court did the right thing by the sentence and the state government will support it” What happened is so important to the state,to the security of the state and the nation in general.What the court did is absolutely right.And we support it completely, What an irresponsible act.If not because of the state power, nobody could know what would happen in the future”
The Governor stated that the convict bad confessed to being a member of a particular Islamic sect but noted that adherents of that sect have rejected him which showed that”It wasn’t a case for a particular sect but rather of one who just decided to derail”
Ganduje who further revealed that he would not hesitate to sign the death warrant if the case goes to the Appeal and Supreme Courts however said that for now, the state government had no right to execute the sentence as the convict was given a 30- day grace to appeal the judgement.
An Upper Shari’a Court in Kano had on August 10, 2020, sentenced a singer and Kano resident, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu 22, to death by hanging for blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed.citing Section 382(b) of Kano Shari’a Penal Code of 2000.
It appears the die is cast on the issue as Council of Imams, Moslem Scholars and even the Muslim Lawyers Association in Nigeria all want the death sentence on the singer carried out.
