Baring any moment from now, Lagdo Dam of Cameron will begin water release to River Benue in the next 7 days.
The release of water from the dam yearly has led to severe flooding in the Benue trough and the River Niger , and forcing cities and villages to be under water.
But a statement signed by Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, the MD/ CEO of the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency said the managers of the Lagdo Dam have” stated that the planned water release will be gradual so as not to exceed the conveyance of the Benue river system and cause major flooding downstream Nigeria.
The Agency urged Nigerians not to panic as ” the flow levels along the Benue are still within the warning levels.
It however advised” all states that are contiguous to the river Benue system, namely,Adamawa, Taraba,Benue , Nasarawa,Kogi,Edo, Delta, Anambra ,Bayelsa,Cross – River and Rivers to step up vigilance and deploy adequate preparatory measures to reduce possible impact of flooding that may occur as a result of increase in flow levels of our major rivers at this period “
