Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The Action Peoples Party (APP) has emerged victorious in the recent local government elections in Rivers State, clinching 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions.
The elections, held on Saturday across all 23 council areas, were marked by protests from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Justice Adolphus Enebeli, Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), announced the results on Saturday evening. He indicated that the declaration of the overall results is still pending due to ongoing vote collation in the Etche Local Government Area.
“The results for Etche LGA will be announced alongside the outcomes for the 319 councillorship positions at a later date,” Enebeli stated.
In the lead-up to the elections, Governor Simi Fubara directed all aspirants for council chairmanship to acquire nomination forms from the APP, a strategic move that appears to have bolstered the party’s electoral success.
The political climate surrounding the election has been tense, with both the APC and PDP raising concerns about the electoral process. Despite these protests, the APP’s significant victory positions it strongly within the state’s local government framework.
Further details and developments will be provided as the situation evolves.
