Top Nigerian politicians are affected by the recent United States visa restrictions.
Top among them are former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC Adams Oshiomhole,Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai who was banned earlier,had his own ban extended.
The politicians affected by the latest ban were said to have been informed via email and text messages.
US officials say more political actors may face restrictions after the off cycle elections in Edo and Ondo states slated for September 19 and October 10 2020.
In a statement issued on Monday, the spokesperson for the Department of State, Morgan Ortagus had said those issued the visa bans were so sanctioned due to their actions that undermined democracy in Nigeria.
The sanctions imposed by the Secretary of State the statement said was not directed to the Nigerian people as it was specific to certain individuals who operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and have undermined the democratic principles.
The statement said the restrictions reflected the Department of State’s commitment to working with the Nigerian Government to realise its expressed commitment and strengthen democracy, accountability and respect for human rights.
