Tik Tok ,one of the world’s most popular apps went off in the United States on Saturday night few hours before January 19 when the Supreme court ban was slated to take effect.
The Chinese App , had been used by over 170 million Americans.
Users of the app were greeted with a message reading ” Sorry ,Tik Tok isn’t available right now. A law banning Tik Tok has been enacted in the U. S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use Tik Tok for now.”
The development comes after the Supreme Court on Friday upheld a ban that was passed by Bi-partisan congress and signed into law by the Biden administration in April..
Coming amid threats to national security and growing tension in the U S against Chinese espionage, the law prevents American companies from hosting or serving content for Tik Tok unless it sells itself to the United States or one of its allies.
However, the company expressed optimism of being reinstated as soon as Monday.
Giving the renewed hope to users late Saturday it wrote ” We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate Tik Tok once he takes office.. Please stay tuned” it said
President – elect, Donald Trump had expressed concern about the impact of Tik Tok during his electioneering campaign in 2023.
But Trump who takes office on Monday has assured Tik Tok of a 90-day extension.
Although, the incoming president said his decision on the matter was not final,he stated ” ” I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at.” he told the NBC in an interview adding” It’s a very big situation. If I decide to do that , I’ll probably announce it on Monday “
