The House of Representatives has rescinded its decision on a Bill that seeks to end immunity enjoyed by the Vice president,Governors and Deputy Governors.
The development comes a day after the Bill sponsored by Rep, Solomon Bob ( PDP)representing Representing Rivers State passed second reading in plenary.
However, the green chamber reversed its decision after Rep Julius Ihonvbere ( Edo State) , Majority leader of the house moved a motion against it.
Bob had noted that the Bill seeks to promote accountability in public offices by removing the immunity provided for the top public officials.
Meanwhile, there had been reaction since Wednesday the lawmakers allowed it to that stage of passage, Prominent Nigerians reasoned with the accountability aspect of the document but disagreed that the removal of immunity did not affect the president. Those in this school of thought, opined that since the President and Vice won election in a joint ticket, it would be caloius to remove immunity from the vice and others.
They argued that Section,308 of the Constitution clearly states that ” the president, vice -president, governor, and deputy governor, during the period he,she is holding the office, shall not be subjected to civil or criminal proceedings .
” The occupants of the office shall not also be arrested or imprisoned and no process of any court requiring or compelling their appearance”
