President Buhari says his government is committed to total reformation of the Police Force to properly position it to perform it’s constitutional duties.
Buhari who was reacting to the ongoing nation-wide protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS said that the disbandment of SARS was the” first step towards the government’s commitment to extensive police reform in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives of our people.’
Buhari made this known during the Youth emporment programme at the State House in Abuja .He said that the protest against police brutality was genuine and justified
assured that all those who are found culpable in any form of brutality will be brought to justice and expressed regret over the loss of lives in Oyo State during the recent demonstrations.
He added that he has ordered a thorough nvestigation into the incident even as he wants Nigerians to have faith in the Police Force as many of them are hard working adding “A few bad eggs should not be allowed to tarnish the image and reputation of the force.”
The endSARS protest continued in the early hours of Monday across States of the country despite announcement of the Squad:s disbandment.
Protesters were of the view that if they took in the mere statement of disbandment and go to sleep, the squad would be made to come back as they argued it was not the first time they would be asked off the road and then reappear in no time.
Justus,a protester in Abuja who spoke with current matters said,”We want commitment from government. We do not trust redeployment to other departments of the police without adequate training and we want justice for all those who were victims of SARS brutality.
” I was driving my father’s car along Apo bridge after I dropped a guest off and this two SARS men came in broad daylight to tell me there was something wrong with the car particulars. They dragged me out of the vehicle and gave me the beating of my life before they took my car and drove me to their office by Guzape road. They seized my phones and my plea to give me the phone to call my Dad fell on deaf ears. When my parents called and they couldn’t get me and it was getting too late.My Dad had to come to SARS office because a friend of his had told him something similar and he was just right in time to bail me out after a V.I.O personnel confirmed the particulars ,So that is the reason Iam joining others to protest.”
