Nuella was only 10years when She was raped by a middle aged Man who called her into his room on the pretence of buying bananas she was Hawking.
Her mother noticed how she walked when she got home and noticed drop of blood from her upper legs down where she stood and asked her what happened?
She was too afraid to share what she had encountered with her mother. On further prodding and threat of flogging; the little girl narrated her ordeal to her mother
The Mother obviously lost in thought of how to confront the Hydra headed evil of first the stigma her daughter would face in the community ; second whether the Rapist in question would publicly admit his crime
After a deep thought she was convinced she could do something to save her
daughter from a starring disgrace. She went to the Culprit’s apartment only to find out that he Left the community already,
Nuella bore the injury of being raped at such a young age that she was
despondent, psychologically withdrawn from Men and even her fellow women . In fact, she was utterly disorganized.
A few months later, She was diagnosed with Tuberculosis which she had contracted from that very ugly rape incident , She died afterwards.
ldara was in primary 5 when her stepfather serially raped her.
She could not believe that a Man she called her father could do such a thing to her.
Her determination to leave the home which had become a nightmare for her, made her to work hard in school. Today , she is a renowned doctor, accomplished in her field of study but unmarried, lonely and disillusioned.
The list is endless for younger women who are raped on a daily basis.
The girl child has a right to have a secured life like boys do, She is in no way a prey that any randy predator would feast on.
Rape is a threat to the survival of any family;it is equally a threat to society.
Rape cases are reported daily globally.
In Nigeria it is a recurring decimal.
A couple of weeks back an undergraduate student of the university of Benin was raped in a new generation church.
Under one week rape cases in Nigeria had become astronomical.
Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, had said that within the period of covid 19 lockdown, over a hundred cases have been recorded.
Government and Agencies have suggested the way out of Rape and the Stigma problem.
The National Assembly has sponsored a Bill that would frustrrate constraints rape victims face in society.
Similarly, the Federal Government has promised to deal decisively with offenders with laws on rape.
The Nigerian Constitution prescribes life sentence for culprits, however, there hasn’t been any known offender that has been appropriately jailed.
No matter what the case may be Nigerian women can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
The light may not be too bright for now but it is a good step that the leadership of the country has taken to give hope to the girls.
At this point, it is important to urge women who have girls to be vigilant and teach them basic skills that could secure them from randy men.
We have what it takes to stop the evil called Rape.

Ganduje’s call for ban of Foreign herdsmen.-Matters arising by Boma Nwuke.
In what many see as surprise and unspeakable , Governor Ganduje of Kano state a few days ago hit the nail on the wall when he admitted the evil activities of foreign herders and called on the federal government to refuse them entry into the country.
The reasons he adduced were to check crime and criminality.
The Governor had said that foreign herders come in with weapons to wreak havoc on farmers and engage in other crimes
In recent times, some states in the north and south have been traumatised by herdsmen uprise. The states of Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Ebonyi and Delta are classic examples .
Kano state is a commercial centre of the north and borders States which share boundaries with west and central African Republics like Niger, Chad and Cameroun.
In the past, herdsmen were seen as simple; itenarily rustic group of people armed with bow and arrow and sticks to beat their cattle to order.
The mental picture of the herdsmen nowadays who are identified to be Fulanis is now fear as their motive proved to be ulterior and sinister.
There were reports of herdsmen sacking villages with sophisticated guns and occupying them, farmers stopped going to their farms even where their daily means of livelihood depends on farming. And the fear of herdsmen became the beginning of caution.
If what Governor Ganduje said about the foreign herdsmen is true then the federal government needs not waste any more time to act as it is obvious that the time to act is now.
Nigeria should not continue to watch while the dangerous herdsmen crisscross the length and breadth of the country.
There are extant acts that check immigration though recent acts like immigration act 2015 focuses on work permits, resident , tourism and border security, no provision is made to check herdsmen from other countries and the question demanding immediate answer is why?
Why does it look like the federal government has her hands tied when it comes to herdsmen matters?
Why should herdsmen be allowed to roam freely in a country that is not theirs? If one may ask is it how Nigerians roam freely in other countries?
Why should we watch helplessly while our people are killed to satisfy the land grabbing appetite of ogres?
Governor Ganduje has built the first phase of the Ruga settlement for his people which is welcome
No doubt the settlement will help to stem the tide of wandering for purpose of grazing and contain crime.
It is our hope that other governors in the North will emulate him.
